Walk 13 - Monte Vettore.

Monte Vettore lies in the south of the National Park, and at 2,476 metres is the highest peak in the Sibillini range. The route from Foce to Monte Vettore is long and demanding, but you are rewarded with some of the best views available in the Sibillini range, and a sense of achievement from having made the ascent along less well traveled paths. Because of the ridge walking involved, wet or very windy conditions could prove dangerous. Electrical storms should also be avoided!

Most of the paths used are easily followed, although there are a couple of sections towards the start of the walk where some careful navigation is needed. There are many steep ascends and descents, often requiring careful footwork along intimidating ridges, with sometimes sheer drops to the sides. This is a spectacular walk, requiring a good degree of confidence and competence, but not one for the faint hearted.

The refuge at Foce is often open and serves a good selection of refreshments.

Total Time: 8.0 hours
Total Ascent: 1,580 metres
Total Distance: 17 km

As well as the demanding ascent route, this walk also offers two options:

Option 1 offers the alternative of walking to the small lake of Lago di Pilato from Foce, using the route by which the Monte Vettore ascent returns. This popular route takes you into the heart of the mountains to visit the fabled lake, where local myth says the body of Pontius Pilot was thrown. Although the ascent to the Lago follows good and well signed paths along valley floors, there are sections which are steep, where it can be slippery underfoot. The return route from the Lago re-traces the ascent route.

Total Time: 6.0 hours
Total Ascent: 1,005 metres
Total Distance: 13 km

Option 2 is the most popular route up to the summit of Monte Vettore. It starts from the South side of the mountain, as close as you are able to get by car, and 500m higher than Foce. The paths used are well walked and generally in good condition, although there are sections of steep ascent and descent where loose rocks or wet conditions mean care is needed. The return route from the summit re-traces the ascent route.

The refuge at Forca di Presta, near the start of this route, is open at peak times.

Total Time: 5.0 hours
Total Ascent: 940 metres
Total Distance: 10 km
